有一種說法是，０就像是一顆蛋，而法文裡的蛋叫做 l'oeuf，唸起來就像英文中的 love 而來的。在板球比賽中，也用鴨蛋(duck's egg)來形容０分。
還有另一種解釋， love 是來自荷蘭文的 lof，有表示敬意的意思。
最後一種說法是將 nothing 與 love 連在一起，to do something for love is to do something for nothing(０分)，為愛付出無怨也無"球"。
